Description
The Church of Saints Andrew and Cyprian is the church of La Spezia's Sant'Andrea civic hospital, on Via Vittorio Veneto. Built in 1932 to a design by Franco Oliva, the architect who shaped the city in the early 20th century, it is worth a stop for the sculptures by a local artist.
The gabled facade stands on a raised base clad in rough rustication. Above the entrance porch stand two statues of angels by Augusto Magli, who also made the bronze Stations of the Cross inside.
The name recalls two pieces of the city's history. Sant'Andrea was the name of La Spezia's first hospital, which stood by the Porta di Sant'Andrea, not far from the church of Santa Maria. St. Cyprian, on the other hand, was venerated in the neighborhood opposite today's hospital: his feast day was the occasion for one of the year's four fairs.
Founded as a hospital chapel, it became a parish church in 1986.
