Description
The Church of Sant'Andrea is the parish church of Fabiano Alto, La Spezia's hillside village below Monte Santa Croce: plain on the outside, but inside it keeps some fine works and the wooden group that climbs to the sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Olmo every May.
Its origins go back to the 13th century. Among the paintings, two stand out: a lunette in oil on slate by Felice Del Santo, from 1886, with Jesus, Saint Peter and Saint Andrew, and a canvas of Saint Helena attributed to Francesco Guarino, a 17th-century Neapolitan painter: no one knows how it ended up here.
The large wooden group of the Madonna dell'Olmo reproduces every figure in the painting venerated at the sanctuary. On the eve of the feast, the second Sunday of May, it's carried in procession up to the sanctuary, and the following Sunday it returns to Fabiano Alto to stay for another year. The patron saint, Saint Andrew, is celebrated on November 30.
