La Spezia's Museo dello Sport tells the story of sports in the city and its province through documents, memorabilia and materials from local competitions and athletes. It's housed in the "Gianfranco Mariotti" sports arena, and it's a stop for fans of sports and of local history.
It was created by the association of the same name, founded to collect, catalog and display the area's sporting memory: the competitions, the promotional activities and the athletes from La Spezia who starred in them, in the city and across the province.
The museum opened in 2010, after ten years of work by the association. Besides the permanent collection, it organizes exhibitions, conferences and events on the history of sports, together with local authorities and associations.
