Description

The Museo Nazionale dei Trasporti is La Spezia's train museum, next to the Centrale station, in the old railway buildings of the Squadra Rialzo on Via Fossitermi. Steam locomotives, carriages and model railways make it a stop for families and enthusiasts.

The stars are the restored locomotives: outdoors the E.626 electric from 1936, indoors three steam engines, the oldest from 1908. Alongside them are carriages, freight cars and signaling systems.

One section recreates the interiors of old Italian stations, with ticket offices, furnishings and flags. Then there are models of locomotives in various scales, some electric model railways, period photos, films and paintings devoted to train travel.

The museum was founded in 1986 on the initiative of transport companies, banks and industries. At first it mainly collected streetcars, buses and trolleybuses, up to about twenty vehicles; the railway section came later, opening in 2003. Since 2018 it has also had a branch at the Taggia station.
