Description
The Palazzo degli Studi is the large school building on Piazza Verdi, in the center of La Spezia: since 1923 it has housed the Lorenzo Costa classical high school, and today a middle school as well.
Named after Prince Umberto, it was inaugurated in 1923 in the presence of King Victor Emmanuel III, and it was part of the great plan that demolished the old Torretto neighborhood. The architect Armando Titta also designed the Sala Dante, with its decorations, whose entrance is at the back, on Via Ugo Bassi.
The numbers show how ambitious it was: four entrances, gyms, 60 classrooms and about half a kilometer of corridors three meters wide. Among those who sat at the high school's desks are the writer Maurizio Maggiani and the physicist Guido Tonelli.
