Description
Located at the intersection of Via Sprugola and Via Colombo stands the ancient Ice Factory of La Spezia.
Its origins date back to 1920 when the Società Anonima Industria del Freddo (Anonymous Society of Cold Industry) sought to provide the city with a facility for the cold storage of food.
The young architect Franco Oliva was entrusted with the project, which he completed in 1923.
The building, in the new Secession style, presents itself as a four-story parallelepiped, whose facades are characterized by a remarkable vertical thrust imparted to them by the alternation of tall concrete pillars and equally tall windows.
At the base of the pillars are placed beautiful bas-reliefs of polar animals by the sculptor Magli.
The building's roof is partly gable roof, partly terrace.
Having ceased its original function, the building was purchased and restored by a bank in 1976 for its offices.
