La Spezia's Palace of Justice is the great marble-banded cube at the intersection of Viale Italia and Via Carducci, in the Mazzetta neighborhood: it's the first thing you see when you arrive in town from the highway, and one of the symbols of modern La Spezia.
It was designed by Ignazio Gardella, the architect of the new Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. The facades alternate bands of marble and of plaster mixed with brick dust, closed at the top by a heavy band; the whole volume seems to rest on a row of black columns. At street level is an open portico, a covered square paved in stone.
The floor plan is a square 55 meters on each side around a courtyard of 22. Inside are four floors of courtrooms, which are taller, and five of offices and archives. Construction dragged on for many years amid plenty of controversy: it was finished only in 1994.
