Description
Palazzo San Giorgio is an Art Deco apartment building on Via dei Colli, on the slope above Via XX Settembre in La Spezia: one of the most important of its kind built in the city in the 1920s, recognizable from afar by the female statues crowning its roofs.
It was built between 1925 and 1927 by the architect Raffaello Bibbiani, with the sculptor Augusto Magli for the decorations. The sculptures, friezes and pilasters are made of concrete conglomerate imitating stone, and mix classical figures with Deco motifs: a stepped pyramid, a stylized vase of flowers.
The floor plan is Y-shaped: a central seven-story block between two five-story wings, enlivened by bay windows. At the top, on their stepped bases, the Michelangelesque statues have become a landmark of the neighborhood.
