The Parco del Colombaio is the green lung of La Spezia's western side, behind the Alberto Picco stadium, toward Buggi: a park full of tall trees, with a curiosity that soccer fans love.
The city's old 19th-century walls separate it from Pegazzano. Among the trees, new ones have been planted under the law that requires towns to plant a tree for every child born.
The curiosity is a small rise from which you can see, as the crow flies, a slice of the stadium's field: the center circle and a few meters of grass. When Spezia plays, some people settle for that. The stadium, from 1919, bears the name of Alberto Picco, the team's founder and captain, who died in World War I.
