Description
The Parco della Rimembranza is a small wood on Gaggiola hill, in the northern part of La Spezia, near the convent of San Francesco: about a hectare of tall trees, with a small pond, created as a memorial to those who died in World War I.
Every tree has a name: one was planted for each of the 538 men of La Spezia who fell, with cypresses at the top of the hill and oaks, pines, lindens and larches on the slopes. The result, a hundred years later, is a real forest.
The park was dedicated to the fallen on November 4, 1923. It was designed by the painter Felice Del Santo and created by the agronomist Alfredo Bartolozzi. The hill's name, after all, seems to come from a Lombard word for "sacred grove."
