Description

Piazza del Mercato, that is Piazza Cavour, is La Spezia's covered market, in the city center. Above the stalls stretches a roof shaped like a wave, meant to recall the sea, one of the city's symbols.

In the middle, two glass structures form the "square within the square": two large sails, one concave and one convex, made of triangular panels of glass and aluminum. Together with the wave they bring to mind a sailing ship under way. Under the sails, brighter, is the public space for events.

The details are curious. The cladding of the beams and pillars has no flat surfaces, so as not to give pigeons a foothold. A film of water runs over the glass walls at both ends: in summer it absorbs the heat of the sun, in winter it is turned off and lets in the full light.

One Sunday a month, except in July and August, the square hosts the Cercantico, the market of antiques and vintage objects.
